Information About

Roman Art

The art of the Roman Empire or Roman art encompasses the artistic practices of Sculpture , Pottery , Painting and Roman Architecture .

EARLY INFLUENCES

The development of Roman art was strongly influenced by Etruscan and Greek Art . As Rome's rule on the ancient world grew it was influenced by other countries like Ancient Egypt and the Sassanid Empire.

THE ROMAN STYLE OF ART

The Romans often depicted warriors and heroic adventures. Much of their art shows the foundation and rise of the city of Rome (the legend of Romulus And Remus is a recurrent theme), and their complex relations to their gods.

SCULPTURE

The Romans used various materials in their sculptures such as marble, even sticks of wood. Many of their sculptures were large polychrome terra-cotta images, such as the Apollo of Veii (Villa Givlia, Rome), but the painted surface of many of them is worn away with time!

Value relative to Greek sculptures

While few Greek sculptures have survived intact, Roman replicas of them have survived. An example of this is at the British Museum , where an intact 2nd century (CE) Roman copy of a statue of Venus is displayed, while a similar original Greek statue at the Louvre Museum in France (500 BCE) is missing her arms.
