Roller Boogie (1979) is a United Artists film starring Linda Blair (the former Child Actress from '' The Exorcist '') and introducing Jim Bray (a former competitive artistic skater from California.) The film also stars Beverly Garland , Mark Goddard , and Kimberly Beck , and is directed by Mark L. Lester . PLOT The film is set in the Venice , California area at the height of the quad Roller Skating fad. Two characters, Bobby James (Bray) and Terry Barkley (Blair), fall in love while boogie skating to Disco music. Along the way they must thwart a powerful mobster who wants the land their favorite Roller Rink sits on and compete in the Boogie Contest. At the time of filming, Jim Bray had won over 270 trophies at age eighteen. Linda Blair at age twenty had to leave filming quickly to appear in court in Texas. On the surface, "Roller Boogie" is a campy low budget movie obviously made quickly before the roller skating fad met its end. However, some believe the film to have a subtler genius that they feel shouldn't be denied. Directed by Mark. L. Lester , who also directed " Class Of 1984 " and " Firestarter ", "Boogie" is seen by some as a commentary on the frivolity of American youth on the verge of Yuppiedom circa 1979. To them, Blair captures the innocence of an individuality that they believe to be forfeited at a young age for responsibility and respectability. "I want to win a roller boogie contest down on the boardwalk!". Don't we all? They also believe that Bray not only fulfills the role of the downtrodden young whiz kid, representing the Bohemian nature of Terry's dreams, but owns an intense sensitivity swollen by his lack of funds and an adequate gym membership. Remaining under the radar, this movie, with its amazing costumes, skinny, shirtless young men, and innocent girls that just want to skate and "have someone hold {Link without Title} ", is seen by many to immortalize a happier time.
