A member of the United States Republican Party , he served in the Vermont state Legislature for six terms. He was first elected Governor in 1976 and was re-elected four times, but left office in January 1985, choosing not to run in 1984 . He ran for the U.S. Senate in 1986 but lost to Patrick Leahy in a landslide. In 1990 he was once again elected governor, becoming the first Vermont governor to win five mandates. He died of a Heart Attack seven months after his final inauguration. The Lieutenant Governor , Democrat Howard Dean , was sworn in as governor. His widow, Barbara Snelling (R), was elected lieutenant governor in 1992 and served two terms until suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in 1996 while campaigning for governor. She was elected to the Vermont State Senate in 1998, where she served until she retired in 2002 . Governor Snelling's daughter, Diane Snelling (R), succeeded her mother as a state senator in 2002 and has been elected twice since then. EXTERNAL LINK |
