A red ribbon, a Ribbon colored Red , has several different meanings in different contexts. ANTI-DRUG SYMBOL Every year in the United States , one week is designated National Red Ribbon Week by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which urges citizens to wear red ribbons as a symbol to "say no to Drugs ." Many Primary School s and Secondary School s systematically hand out red ribbons to their students in this week and encourage students to wear them. ANTI-AIDS SYMBOL The red ribbon is used internationally as a symbol of the fight against AIDS which first came to prominence at the 1991 Tony Awards . The red ribbon has been a powerful psychological component of AIDS, although it has recently declined in popularity {Link without Title} Disagreement over origins There is some disagreement as to the origin of the ribbon. Many attribute its creation to , a singer, songwriter, and actor who died of AIDS in 1992 {Link without Title} . In any case, there is little doubt that the idea was conceived sometime around 1991, shortly before the Tony Awards. Meaning of the Red Ribbon The Red Ribbon Foundation describes the meaning of the red ribbon as follows: ''The Red Ribbon is the global symbol for solidarity with HIV positive and people living with AIDS, and it unites the people in the common fight against this disease.'' ''The Red Ribbon is ... ''Red, like love, as a symbol of passion and tolerance towards those affected. ''Red, like blood, representing the pain caused by the many people that died of AIDS. ''Red, like the anger about the helplessness by which we are facing a disease for which there is still no chance for a cure. ''Red as a sign of warning not to carelessly ignore one of the biggest problems of our time'' FAIR AWARD At County and State Fair s in the United States , a red ribbon is awarded to the competitor finishing in second place in a contest. Sometimes it is used for first place in Canada . In some judging competitions, particularly in 4-H and FFA Livestock and Horticultural competitions, red ribbons may be given to a project that meets some of the judging criteria but falls short in other areas.
