Information About

Quireboys

The band were formed in 1986 consisting of Spike (Jonathon Gray) on vocals/frontman, Guy Bailey (guitar), Chris Johnstone (keyboards), Ginger (guitar), Nigel Mogg (bass) and drummer Coze. They came to the attention of Phil Mogg who became their manager. They rapidly established themselves as a noteworthy live act in small clubs and quickly won support slots with several major Hair Metal / Glam Rock bands, including Guns N' Roses and Yngwie Malmsteen , as well as a slot in the Reading Festival in 1987 and again the following year.

Their resulting good reputation led them to be signed up by EMI, and Phil Mogg ceased managing them. Prior to recording their first album, Coze was sacked and the drum parts undertaken by session man Ian Wallace. The permanent replacement was subsequently Rudy Richman. The resultant album A BIT OF WHAT YOU FANCY was a huge success, most notably in Britain and Japan , peaking at no.2 in both countries, and the period 1990-1991 saw them at the peak of their success, with major live appearances including the Monsters Of Rock festival at Donington Park in 1990 and as part of a major rock weekend at Wembley Arena in January 1991.

In 1991 Ginger was replaced by Guy Griffin, and went on to form bands such as The Wildhearts and Silver Ginger 5 , and a live album LIVE AROUND THE WORLD was released.

In 1992 no new product was forthcoming, and Hair Metal was being swept aside by the emergence of Grunge with its grittier sombre sound. By the time the next album BITTER SWEET AND TWISTED finally emerged in 1993, much of their audience had evaporated. Realising they were flogging a dead horse, the band agreed to split up.

In 2001 the band reunited and have subsequently made a living on the rock Nostalgia circuit.
