LIFE

Troupe was born in New York City in 1939 and grew up in East St. Louis , Illinois . He claimed to have earned degrees from Grambling College and Los Angeles City College .

CAREER

In early 2002 Troupe was named California 's first Poet Laureate of the state. But, Troupe had lied on his résumé- claiming to have a 1963 Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Grambling College when he only took a few classes and never completed them. A few weeks after June 11, 2002, when sworn in as Poet Laureate his lie was exposed. The University Of California, San Diego gave him the choice of being fired, suspended for a year without pay, or taking a forced retirement, with all his benefits intact. He retired and resigned as Poet Laureate.

In addition to poetry, he has written ''Miles, the Autobiography'' (1989), which received an Center in Los Angeles during the summers of 1969 and 1970.

Among his honors and awards are fellowships from the National Foundation For The Arts , the New York Foundation for the Arts, and a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. He has taught at the University of California--San Diego, and Columbia University . Troupe lives with his wife, Margaret, and son Porter, in La Jolla, CA.
