Location & HoursThe QSCC is located in Coffman Memorial Union 205. Its regular office hours are 9am - 6pm, Monday through Friday, during regular academic sessions. There are limited hours during winter and spring breaks, as well as during summer session. HistoryThe first official University of Minnesota student organization for Gay and Lesbian students was begun in May of 1969 under the title of F.R.E.E. (Fight Repression of Erotic Expression). The organization was renamed Minnesota Gay Activists in 1972 and University Lesbian Gay Community in 1977. The organization split in 1982 to become the University Gay Community and the University Lesbians. Other Gay and Lesbian student groups include Bi Wimmin Welcome, organized in 1985; Delta Lambda Phi Fraternity Delta Chapter, organized in 1987; University Bi Community, Bi Students of Color and GLBT International Students, all organized in 1990. In 1991, the aforementioned groups formed the Association of GLBT Student Organizations and Their Friends; in 1998 the group was reformed as QSCC. The QSCC is currently made up of eight member groups and six affiliate groups who help carry out their mission and activities. These eight member groups include Tranarchy, Biversity, Queer Graduate and Professional Association, Queer Women, Friends and Allies, Delta Lambda Phi Fraternity, Queer Men and Arch (a coming-out support group); the six affiliate groups consists of Co-Rise, GLBTA Network, GLBTQ Health Advocates, Keshet, 2007 MBLGTACC Planning Committee, and Queer Saint Paul. Mission StatementTo celebrate the diversity and culture of the queer community; educate the University of Minnesota community on issues pertinent to the lives of queer students; advocate for inclusion and equality of all persons regardless of sexual or gender orientations; provide a safe space for queer students to meet and form a sense of community; and empower queer individuals, groups, and organizations. Executive BoardThe Executive Board is made up of two co-chairpersons and a treasurer. Board of GovernorsThe Board of Governors consists of the Executive Board, up to two facilitators or representatives from all eight member groups, a representative from all six affiliates, four interns, and up to seven at-large representatives. A non-voting representative from the GLBT Programs Office also sits on the Board. Its weekly meetings are jointly chaired by the co-chairpersons. Advisory BoardThe Advisory Board is made up of members of the community and University faculty that provides advice and guidence to the QSCC Executive Board. Footnotes |
