Punk Pop

For other music genres using the descriptors "punk" and "pop", see the Disambiguation Page .

Punk pop refers to "popular" or mainstream punk music. The term can often be confused with Pop-punk which is a Punk genre which focuses more on poppy and usually light-hearted tunes than the broader punk community.

Allmusic.com defines punk pop as a post-grunge strand of alternative rock that combines power-pop melodies and chord changes with speedy punk tempos and loud guitars.

2000S

Beginning in about 1999 , the band Blink-182 began combining the sounds of Punk Rock , Emo , and Teen Pop in some of their songs, such as "All The Small Things", inspiring many bands, especially from the Midwest , to form similar groups based on such genres. Note that despite the rise of this style of music during this time in mainstream media due to Blink-182 's popularity a sound similar to the originators of Pop-Punk and very different from blink-182 had been and still is flourishing in underground circles considered by many as Independant Pop Punk .

HISTORY

The history of Pop-punk can be traced back, of course, to the punk of the 1970s , which by the 1990s became quite mainstream with Grunge bands and their "alternative" counterparts afterwards, such as Green Day .

During the late 1990s , Blink-182 and a few other bands popularized a strain of radio-friendly punk rock that by the mid- 2000s began to dominate rock music. More than Numetal or Grunge bands, their appeal crossed into pop fans because of their lyrical style and perceived trendiness.

STYLE

Pop-punk in the 2000s is often accompanied with fashion somewhat a cross of New Wave Music and goth, often including work clothes and punk haircuts.

The music is usually guitar-based, but is often accompanied by keyboards and synthesizers, and ranges from happy to emotional (sometimes perhaps even whiny). Lyrical content included teen angst, such as relationship problems, to John Hughes -like high school related songs and global issues.
