Punicalagin

Punicalagins received much attention in the early part of 2005, when sales of pomegranate juice increased in Europe and the United States. Numerous research sponsored by the US's largest pomegranate juice manufacturer has shown that punicalagins are the main polyphenol responsible for the juice's antioxidant potency, which ranks higher than red wine, green tea, or commercial fruit juices.

Sidestepping the stigma of the juice's sugar, calories, and additives, several companies offer extracts of pomegranate for use as ingredients in food and health supplements. Yet few extracts remain available that are clinically tested for specific health benefits, standardized to punicalagins, come from pomegranates grown without genetic modification or pesticides, and consist of the natural ratio of polyphenols as found in pomegranate.

The term 'punicosides' has appeared outside of peer-reviewed research to denote compounds relating to punicalagins, however the relation of the two remains unclear.
