PRESIDENT OF SLOVENIA (1991)

The function of President of the Republic of Slovenia was established on December 23, 1991, when the National Assembly of Slovenia passed a new constitution as a result of independence from Yugoslavia .

Although entrusted with limited power by the constitution, in practice the position is mostly ceremonial. Among other things the President is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Slovenian Army and has to adhere to political neutrality during his/her term. The President of Slovenia is directly elected by universal adult suffrage once every five years. Any Slovenian citizen can run for President, but can hold only two consecutive terms in office. This has caused some speculation whether a third term is permitted if non-consecutive, for example Milan Kučan running for office in the 2007 Elections .
