Portsmouth Abbey School

HISTORY

The Portsmouth Abbey School is located on Aquidneck Island. It was originally founded by John Hugh Diman, a Monk at the Portsmouth Priory, and a former Episcopalian . Diman's effort to found Portsmouth was not his first. In 1896, Diman founded St. George's School in Middletown, Rhode Island on the Atlantic Ocean . A Conversion Experience brought Diman to Catholicism and ultimately to the Benedictine's that were just beginning a Priory in Portsmouth. After joining the Order of Benedict , Diman was again moved to found a school.

CURRENT AFFAIRS

Today, the Portsmouth Abbey School represents 17 Nations and a number of States . Its Enrollment totals over 340 students, living at home and in six Residential Houses . It boasts, among other things, a nationally-ranked Sailing team, and a world-class, 18 hole links styled, Scottish golf course, Carnegie Abbey. Recently, WJHD (named for John Hugh Diman, school founder) played host to The Squizzles one of Providence, RI 's most popular rock grorps.

TRADITIONS

The Abbey School is also dedicated to a number of Traditions . In the center of the school campus is a large Quadrangle that students and faculty are not allowed to walk on. This "holy lawn" is an unwritten school rule that has no clear Story of origin. Its name likely derives from the lawn's location in front of the Abbey Church . Another school tradition is a required year of Latin . "George's Monday", the celebrated day of competition with St. George's School also forms a cornerstone of school life. Abbey lore includes the story of a Ghost called "Triangle Man" that haunts a third form Dormitory .
