Information About

Polarity

The polarity of an object is, in general, its physical alignment. The term is often used to describe the positive and negative ends of Batteries and Magnet s.

In Cell Biology , polarity refers to cells not being point-symmetrical in their spatial organization. This is particularly evident for cells organized in Single Cell Layers that separate Organs or subcompartments in Organism s.

In chemistry, molecular Polarity refers to the Dipole -dipole Intermolecular Force s between the slightly Positively-charged end of one molecule to the negative end of another or the same molecule. Molecular polarity is dependent on the difference in Electronegativity between atoms in a compound and the Asymmetry of the compound's structure. For example, Water is thought of to be polar because of the uneven sharing of its Electron s. However, Methane is considered non-polar because the carbon shares the hydrogen molecules uniformally.

In horticulture, polarity refers to the condition in which cuttings grow shoots at the distil end (end of cutting nearest the tip of plant) and roots at the proximal end (end of cutting nearest the plant crown). A cutting could therefore be planted with correct or incorrect polarity.
