The song was the first to explicitly acknowledge the fledgling
New Romantic music/fashion movement, with the line ''"Like some New Romantic looking for the TV sound"''.

Music Video for the song was directed by future film director
Russell Mulcahy , who would go on to direct a dozen more for the group. The video was so popular on Australian music shows that the single "Planet Earth" went to #1 on the Australian charts, when Duran Duran had not yet done any promotion or touring there.
The "night version" (extended remix) of "Planet Earth" was included on the 1981 Japanese '' (1989) and ''
Greatest '' (1998).
