FILM SYNCHRONICITIES >''The Wizard of Oz'' When the album '' The Dark Side Of The Moon '' is played simultaneously with the 1939 film '' The Wizard Of Oz '', the images of the movie often appear to be synchronized with the music and lyrics. Many fans have explored this phenomenon, which band members deny was intentional. See Wizard Of Oz-Dark Side Of The Moon Synchronicity >''2001: A Space Odyssey'' Another interesting synchronization occurs between the song "'', titled "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite." Although the relationships are less literal than those of the synch for ''The Wizard of Oz'', they flow together well in a way that suggests that Pink Floyd intended the synchronization. When the two are played at the same time, there are periods where they are so similar that it is not discernable whether the sounds are from the song or the movie. The synch is started by aligning the first note of "Echoes" (the high pitched "ping") with the appearance of the title "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite." this version of the song runs for 23 minutes and finishes as the credits begin to roll. There is a second version of the song recorded for the album "Atom Heart Mother (goes on the road)". This edition is 26 mins long and longer than the original by 3 minutes. It is interesting to note that the credit sequence for 2001 runs for 3 minutes and fades out at exactly at the same time as the music. When you try to sync this version of the song with 2001, you'll notice that everything is synced as was before right up until the end of the stargate sequence when Bowman exits the vehicle. From this point on there are several diffrences: -The song continues into the credits and the sonar sound comes on and fades out over the "the end" title. - The lyrics begin as soon as the credits start to roll. - The scary seagull sound comes on as Bowman looks around his empty room. - when bowman sees the old man the music mellows and becomes very "twilight zone esq." as he points at the monolith. - when old bowman sees the star child the music becomes very much like the original soundtrack with heavy guitar and very climax like feel to it. It has been suggested that Kubrick may have at one point contacted Pink Floyd to score the film using existing and new material ("Echoes" could have had its genesis there, as Pink Floyd rarely completely abandoned a composition). A Clockwork Orange and other Kubrick films may also have been considered for similar treatment in varying degrees. >''Alice In Wonderland'' One other interesting synchronization occurs when '' The Wall '' and the Disney version of '' Alice In Wonderland '' are played simultaneously. Certain songs, such as " The Thin Ice ", " Mother ", and " Run Like Hell ", seem to fit the images on the screen extremely well. Interestingly, " Comfortably Numb " must be skipped in order for the synchronicity to work; there is actually a minus sign next to the song time on the back cover of the remastered CD edition of ''The Wall''. >''Apocalypse Now'' Another synchronization occurs when the Kurtz/Caribou killing scene in '' Apocalypse Now '' is played along with the song " One Of These Days " from ''Meddle'' {Link without Title} . The beginning of the song is about 1 minute of soft wind blowing and is included. The song is begun at the same time as chapter 34 from the ''Apocalypse Now Redux'' DVD, entitled "Caribou Sacrifice".
STOCK MARKET SYNCHRONICITIES The release of new albums by Pink Floyd has presaged economic disaster 12 times in the past 30 years. Two albums were followed by the greatest financial collapses in modern times. The bizarre link between Pink Floyd albums and bear markets began in June 1968 with the release of '''' came out in October 1969. The market, which had been enjoying a mild recovery, instantly dived 12 per cent and remained low for a year. When '' The Dark Side Of The Moon '' hit record stores in March 1973, its subject matter of mental illness was matched by an economic depression of nightmare proportions that developed at the same time. As the album rocketed to the top of the charts, the Dow plunged to a 12-year low. With one brief exception, world markets remained in the dumps for the next 21 months, with the Dow 44 per cent below its peak. The album’s lengthy term on album charts for years coincided with the darkest days of the decade as the world struggled with fuel shortages triggered by an OPEC oil embargo, and the Watergate scandal kept US politics in turmoil. It may have been sheer coincidence that in 1976 Pink Floyd released nothing and share prices made impressive gains. But the prosperous mood evaporated in January 1977 as the gloom-laden '' Animals '' was released. Over the next 13 months the Dow slid a massive 25 per cent. The market made a tentative recovery -- but all it took to stall it was the release in November 1979 of '' The Wall ''. Though '''''s release in March 1994 coincided with a global bond market meltdown. The pattern recurred yet again when EMI released '' Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81 '' in Britain on March 27, 2000. The NASDAQ index was already in a slide, and its 27 per cent plummet in the space of four weeks decisively signaled the end of the Tech Boom . Overall, the band has notched up a scorecard in which three out of four albums have been attended by savage bear markets on world stock exchanges.
