The Period Eye and Cognitive Style (see below) was originally described by Michael Baxandall in his book Painting and Experience in Fifteenth-Century Italy. The Period Eye basically describes cultural values and experiences influencing cultural perceptions and perspectives of common visual imagery. Another notable art historian concentrating on is an important part of Visual Culture . Women’s lives were quite different from men during the Renaissance because of a women’s lack of power, privilege, and rights. Women’s lives have also been far less documented and recorded in comparison to men. This lack of female historical documentation is directly related to women’s lack of education and subsequent lack of women writers during the Renaissance . Women might have lacked a role in the creation of art and literature, but did have a role in material and visual culture, seen in the Virgin Mary And Bare-breasted female imagery. The multitude of changes during the Renaissance, especially in Italian culture, is referred to as Periodization . Randolph mentions ''deschi da parto'' or birth trays that were full of specific foods thought to be beneficial for pregnant women. These ''deschi da parto'' represented a communal visual experience, a private symbolic baptism for the mother, and even expressed women’s liberations. Common imagery for these birth trays typically pertained to Male Dominance and were decorated with popular mythological and literary imagery. |
