Born David Paul MacPherson Almond in Montreal, Quebec , he attended Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec and McGill University before going to England to study at Oxford University . At the CBC in Canada, he worked as a scriptwriter plus he directed and produced numerous programs. He also did similar work for the BBC until he took up feature-length filmmaking. In 1967, Paul Almond married actress Geneviève Bujold with whom he had a son, Matthew James Almond. The couple divorced in 1973. In recent years, Almond has authored several novels.
