Information About

Original Camera Negative

Each reel of film holds about 10 minutes of film, at 24 frames per second. 600 seconds x 24 or 14,400 frames of film.

The most common film is 35mm , and rarely used is 70mm film. From the original camera negative an interpositive print is made for editing. The interpositive when edited into a final cut can be used to make an internegative print, which is used to make distribution prints.

Resolution is lost in each transfer. When older movies are restored or transferred to a new medium such as DVD the original camera negatives are sought out as the source with the highest resolution and the fewest scratches.
