The Oriental Bangkok (founded over 130 years ago) is often referred to as the "Legend on the River." In this instance the river is the Chao Phraya River. The hotel has almost a 3:1 staff to guest ratio. Many well-known authors and guests have stayed here including Joseph Conrad and Noel Coward: consequently, suites are named after them. The restaurants in the hotel are: The Bamboo Bar, Sala Rim Naan, Lord Jim's, Le Normandie, Chinahouse, the Riverside Terrace, the Verandah, the Author's Lounge, and Ciao.

The general manager of the hotel is Kurt Wachteivetel who was instrumental in the purchase of the Oriental by Mandarin Oriental Hotels in 1974.
