Ohio (song)

RECORDING

Almost immediately after the shootings occurred, Neil Young penned the lyrics to "Ohio" after seeing the photos of the incident in '' Life '' magazine. On the evening that CSNY entered the Recording Studio , The Record Plant, the song had already been practiced. They recorded it in a few takes, and the four musicians stayed to help with the Mixing of the record. "Find the Cost of Freedom," was the B-side of the single. It had also been practiced beforehand and was quickly finished. The record was Mastered in New York City and was heard on the radio within a few weeks.

LYRICS

The lyrics help evoke the mood of the turbulent time, especially the line "Four dead in Ohio," repeated throughout the song. "Tin soldiers and Nixon coming," describes the Ohio National Guardsmen who killed the student protesters and Young's attribution of their deaths to the President Of The United States , Richard Nixon . David Crosby once said that Young saying Nixon's name in the lyrics was "The bravest thing I ever heard."
