Numbering Scheme Of The German Railways

Until the creation of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in 1924, there was a myriad of classes, some only including three or four engines, sometimes even less. The DRG standardised the locomotive numbering using both numbers and letters.

In 1968, a computer numbering system was introduced by the Deutsche Bundesbahn of West Germany to replace the old DRG scheme that had been amended after the war. The main article for that is Locomotive Classification Of The Deutsche Bundesbahn . The Deutsche Reichsbahn of the German Democratic Republic followed soon after.

Since reunification and the merger of the both companies into Deutsche Bahn AG , the old West German system has been expanded through the whole of German Rail, embracing the DR engines and, where appropriate, renumbering them. (i.e. class 243 DR became class 143 DBAG.)
