The situation in the occupied northern part of the island In the territories of the Cyprus Republic occupied by Turkey in the north of the island, the turkish numbering plan is in place and area code 392 of the turkish numbering plan has been assigned to the occupied territories. (For international calls to the occupied North +90 392 is thus used). For calls from an area controlled by the Republic towards the occupied northern part of the island the local area code 0139 followed by the 7-digit subscriber number is used and charged on local call rates. 0139 is still used for direct calls to the occupied North even after the numbering plan change of December 2001. For calls from an occupied territory towards the free areas of the Republic, area code 0123 is used and the call is charged on international rates. This direct telephone connection between the free and occupied areas is operated by the United Nations. This UN telecom exchange that allows direct telephone calls between the two communities is in place since 4th May 1998. After 2nd March 2003, direct international calls from Cyprus to Turkey are possible and now Cypriot callers from the free areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus can call the occupied north through Turkey dialling 0090 392 XXXXXXX as well (although in this case international call rates are applied).
