Nova Scotia Young New Democrats





GOALS


The goals of the NSYND are:
  • To serve to further the objectives of the NSNDP. The NSYND shall

  • accomplish this through education, organization and recruitment.

  • To promote issues of concern to youth within the NSNDP.

  • To promote the goals of socialism and democracy.



STRUCTURE


The NSYND is governed by its membership and decisions are made about the direction of the organization at the NSYND's Annual General Meetings and Conventions. To implement the will of the members an executive committee of at least 17 members is elected, consisting of a:

  • Female Co-Chair

  • Male Co-Chair

  • Director of Organization

  • Director of Communication

  • Director of Finance and Fundraising

  • Secretary

  • Policy Coordinator

  • LGBTQA Representative

  • Women's Rights Representative

  • Young Workers' Representative

  • Diversity Representative

  • High Schools Representative

  • One Female and one Male Member-at-Large

  • Three Regional Coordinators

  • Each campus club is allotted a seat on the executive




COMMITTEES


Aside from the NSYND's own committees, the NSYND also has representation on the following committees of the NSNDP:

  • The Provincial Executive

  • Provincial Council

  • Finance Committee

  • Policy Committee

  • Women's Rights Committee

  • Various riding associations



EQUALITY


The Constitution of the NSYND includes a gender parity clause, as well as a clause for the inclusion of Transgendered persons.

  • 2002 - 2004 – no functioning youth wing

  • Feb – June 2004 – Cynthia Shellswell

  • June 2004 – March 2005 – Chris Parsons (interim)

  • March 2005 – Present – Chris Hattie and Kristel vom Scheidt (co-chairs were introduced)



CURRENT


The NSYND attends and organizes various events across Nova Scotia including peace marches, labour demonstrations, and general political education for young people. Currently the NSYND is undergoing a process of renewal and reinvigoration to develop the organization’s grassroots by creating Area Youth Councils around the province.
