The Norwegian Army ('s military land force. It is part of the Norwegian Defence Force along with the Royal Norwegian Navy , the Royal Norwegian Air Force and the Norwegian Home Guard . Established in 1628, the Army is the largest of Norway's armed services, with a peacetime strength of 7,500, and approximately 9,500 fully mobilized. The Army is mainly located in two areas, mid- Troms and the south-eastern part of the country, with other special units like the King's Guards and the border guards placed elsewhere. PRE-WW2 HISTORY The Norwegian Army can trace its roots back to Viking era. Back then the army only consisted of the forces of local kings and their allies. The Army as it's known today was established by the danish-norwegian king Christian IV. His reason for creating a seperate Norwegian Army was "to defend the kingdom against exterior dangers", this is still the main task of the Norwegian Army. The first great victory of the Norwegian Army came in 1808. Sweden attempted an invasion from the South, but were forced back by the forces of prins Kristian August. The officer class was well represented under the writing of the constitution in 1814. There it became descided that Norway shall have a military might, based on the principle of mandatory service for all men. The swedish responded to the declearation of independense by stageing an invasion. This time the Norwegian Army was utterly beaten. The army was kept asleep until 1905, when the Storting voted for leaving the union. It seemed like a war was unevitable. 22 000 men were mobilized, but there was on war. The joint-staff realized that a restructure was needed. The idea was that the greatest treath layed in the East towards Russia and Finland. The army rebased to the Northern most part of Norway, mid-Norway and the Southern lowlands. To spread the army a cross the kingdom seemed fair enough, the only con was that they consentrated the forces in the North. Since the split from Sweden no one could imagine an invasion from the South. Now we can tell that the army cheifs got this wrong, because ever invasion have happend in the South. INSIGNIA In the Norwegian Army only the sovereign and the chief-of-defence are full generals. ORGANIZATION The Army is organized along three functional lines:
Subordinate commands
GARRISONS
HAND WEAPONS
CREW WEAPONS
COMBAT VEHICLES
