NSU was founded in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School to train teachers. NSU was the first school in Louisiana to offer degree programs in nursing and business education. ACADEMICS NSU offers more than 50 degree programs, which are all completely accredited. The academic programs are offered through five main Colleges: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science & Technology. The University College provides general studies curriculum for students who need additional support in working through their undergraduate career. NSU also houses the Louisiana Scholar’s College, described as “Louisiana’s designated four-year, selective admissions honors college.” The Scholar’s College enrolls the absolute best students in the state providing an interdisciplinary learning experience second to none. Northwestern State University has academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level. There are 9 colleges: the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Nursing, the College of Science and Technology, the College of Electronic & Continuing Education, the Graduate School, the University College, and the Louisiana Scholars’ College. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in a variety of fields within the various academic colleges. Degrees at the bachelor’s level can be received in such areas as anthropology, business administration, history, home economics, journalism, mathematics, nursing, music, education, radiologic technology, social work, and theatre. There are pre-professional program in agriculture, engineering, forestry, and medical fields. Associate degrees can be earned in business administration, electronics technology, general studies, nursing, office administration, and veterinary technology. Graduate programs are offered in 4 colleges. These include master’s level programs in education, nursing, English, art, heritage resources, music, and health & human performance. The emphasis is on education; no programs are offered in the physical sciences or technology, any social sciences other than psychology, or in liberal arts other than the ones listed above. There are no doctoral degrees. The Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree is offered through the College of Education in educational leadership & instruction with several different concentrations. TRIVIA NSU was one of the first six colleges to enter into NASA 's Joint Venture Program ("JOVE"). Students working with JOVE created experiments for a 1996 Space Shuttle Columbia shuttle mission. NSU also hosts Louisiana's designated honors college in the liberal arts and sciences, called the Louisiana Scholars' College . The Louisiana School For Math, Science, And The Arts is also located on the campus. NSU currently offers more than 50 degree programs and complete accreditation of all of its accreditable degree programs. Fall 2002 total enrollment was 10,159, a record high. NSU also claims more than 70,000 alumni. Its student-run weekly Newspaper , ''The Current Sauce'', was founded in 1914 . Its annual student-run yearbook is called ''The Potpourri''. There is also a student-run Radio station, KNWD The Demon 91.7FM, and a faculty-administrated and student-operated local television station, NSU22. NSU's literary magazine is called ''The Argus''. It is student-run and published during the spring semester. The magazine content is provided by competitions in various fields of writing and artwork. NSU hosts the annual Miss Northwestern-Lady Of The Bracelet pageant each spring. The winner of that pageant qualifies to compete in the Miss Louisiana pageant, a qualifying event for the Miss America competition. Singer-songwriter Jim Croce died in a plane crash hours after finishing a 1973 concert on the NSU campus. On March 17 , 2006 NSU's 14th-seeded Basketball team shocked the College Basketball world by defeating 3rd-seeded Big Ten Conference tournament champions Iowa in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament .
