Northamptonshire Police




Northamptonshire Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England .

The force area amounts to 914 square miles and has a resident population of 642,708. The force is divided into four basic command units (BCUs), Eastern, Northampton, Northern and Western, each headed by a Chief Superintendent. Police officer strength amounts to 1288 officers.

The Chief Constable since May 2003 is Peter Maddison.

Northamptonshire Police Authority has 9 councillors, 3 Justices Of The Peace , and 5 independent members.

The force in its present form was formed on April 1 , 1966 under the Police Act 1964 as a merger of the Northamptonshire County Constabulary with Northampton Borough Police . The merged force was known as Northampton and County Constabulary until 1974 and the Local Government Act 1972 . {Link without Title}

Proposals made by the Home Secretary on March 20 , 2006 would see the force merge with the other four East Midlands forces to form a strategic police force for the entire region. {Link without Title}
