Northamptonshire Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England . The force area amounts to 914 square miles and has a resident population of 642,708. The force is divided into four basic command units (BCUs), Eastern, Northampton, Northern and Western, each headed by a Chief Superintendent. Police officer strength amounts to 1288 officers. The Chief Constable since May 2003 is Peter Maddison. Northamptonshire Police Authority has 9 councillors, 3 Justices Of The Peace , and 5 independent members. The force in its present form was formed on April 1 , 1966 under the Police Act 1964 as a merger of the Northamptonshire County Constabulary with Northampton Borough Police .
