Information About

North Carolina State Highway 4

NORTHERN TERMINUS

The northern terminus of NC 4 is at US 158 / NC 903 in downtown Littleton .

NC 4 runs for about 20 miles before it runs into I-95 (Exit 145). From there, NC 4 is a four-lane highway.

SOUTHERN TERMINUS

NC 4 is one of the more rural roads in this part of the state, and after leaving Littleton, there are no real towns along NC 4. Running along the border, this section of the state is mainly farmland. The southern terminus is at US 301 as NC 4 reaches Rocky Mount .

HISTORICAL NC 4

  • 1934: As North Carolina renumbers and takes control of its state highways, NC 4 is designated as a state highway, running only a few miles from NC 581 to Airlie .

  • 1951: NC 48 running from Airlie is rerouted, leaving NC 4 to take its place going to Littleton.

  • 1964: NC 4 is extended southward, taking over parts of NC 561 , NC 48 and the decomissioned I-95 BUS to US 301. I-95 BUS was intended to take traffic from US 301 to I-95, and NC 4 took over that role.
