North American Federation Of Temple Youth - Mid-atlantic Region

The North American Federation of Temple Youth - Mid-Atlantic Region, or '''NFTY-MAR''' is one of the nineteen regions of NFTY . NFTY-MAR is supported by the Mid-Atlantic Council of the Union For Reform Judaism (URJ-MAC). NFTY-MAR supplements and supports the Reform synagogue youth groups located in the area served by the URJ-MAC.

NFTY-MAR upholds any resolutions approved by the executive board of NFTY. In addition, dues-paying NFTY-MAR members can submit resolutions (relating to anything from support of a just cause to improving programming at events) at one of the two Plenary sessions held each year.

GEOGRAPHY

NFTY/MAR currently serves temple youth groups from the following States :

Because of its large geographic size, NFTY-MAR is split into subregions in order to better serve the TYGs. There are currently four subregions:

At Winter Kallah 2005, the NFTY-MAR General Board (the Executive Board and representatives of the youth groups) ratified a consitutional amendment to split the Central subregion into the Eastern and Western subregions.

LEADERSHIP

NFTY-MAR is led by the nine-member regional board, who are elected each year at Spring Kallah. The board is aided by an advisor and a cabinet.

Regional Board

There are nine positions on the regional board. They are, in gavel order:

Board members are elected to positions for one-year terms; those not graduating are eligible to run for reelection or for a different position at the end of the year. The board meets three times per year.

At Winter Kallah 2005, the NFTY-MAR General Board (the Executive Board and representatives of the youth groups) ratified a consitutional amendment to split the Central subregion into the Eastern and Western subregions. A resolution to temporarily suspend the duties of the Treasurer and Secretary and to create a Communications Vice President was also passed and will remain in effect until Winter Kallah 2006, where it must be ratified as an amendment to the constitution.

Advisor

The regional advisor is an adult employee of the URJ-MAC. (S)he guides and assists the regional board in the process of running the region. (S)he also manages the NFTY-MAR office.

Cabinet

Cabinet members are appointed for one-year terms by the incoming regional board. Cabinet members assist with any number of tasks given to them by the board. There are too many cabinet positions to list, and the board may add or remove positions at its discretion.

EVENTS

NFTY-MAR holds seven events, or ''kallot'' (plural of the Hebrew ''kallah''), each year in various locations throughout the region. Every event has some sort of theme determined by the event co-chairs in conjunction with the board. Plenary is held at Summer Kallah.

Summer Kallah

Summer Kallah is a four-day event held in August. It is always held at Camp Harlam in conjunction with NFTY Pennsylvania Area Region . The event is planned by the regional board with assitance from the Summer Kallah Co-chairs, who are members of the regional cabinet.

LTI

Every fall, NFTY-MAR holds a Leadership Training Institute. This event is designated only for cabinet members and leaders of youth groups to focus on leadership and other related skills (including communication, membership, programming, etc.). Every other year, an Adult LTI is operated simultaneously.

Fall Kallah

This weekend event is held in the fall for the whole region. Its location changes every year, and it is held at various synagogues in the region.

Winter Kallah

Similar to Summer Kallah (although not help with NFTY-PAR), this event is held at Camp Harlam. It is usually scheduled December 26-30, except for years when either the 26th or 30th falls on a Saturday. The programatic content for this event is designed and led by the Regional Board and various cabinet members.

MAJYK

The regional board plans and runs a two-day Junior Youth Kallah for 7th and 8th graders to interest them in NFTY. It is planned with the assistance of the Majyician (''sic''), who holds a cabinet position.

TheVENT

This event is similar to Fall Kallah. Subregional color wars (a series of competitions among the four subregions) occur Saturday afternoon and evening at this event.

Spring Kallah

The last event of the year, where the graduating class has an opportunity to say their goodbyes to the region. Elections for regional board are held at Spring, and inductions occur on Saturday night.
