HISTORY

The airstrip was built during World War II , as a southern base to repel the Japanese taking over the Pacific Ocean . As Norfolk Island did not have enough flat ground, several bulldozers were used to knock the tops off of several hills, and fill in the valleys between them. Steel mesh was then used to make a solid surface.

The airport was never used as a major base, however it was a stopover for aircraft travelling to and from New Zealand . Mount Bates also had a secret Radar installation.
