Norfolk is a Town located in St. Lawrence County in the US State of New York . As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,565. The Town of Norfolk is in the northern part of the county. HISTORY The town was first settled around 1809. The town was formed in 1823 from part of the Town Of Louisville . GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 149.5 Km&2 (57.7 Mi&2 ). 147.4 km&2 (56.9 mi&2) of it is land and 2.2 km&2 (0.9 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.47% water. The Raquette River flows through part of the town. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 4,565 people, 1,803 households, and 1,280 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 31.0/km&2 (80.2/mi&2). There were 1,959 housing units at an average density of 13.3/km&2 (34.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.06% White , 0.42% Black or African American , 1.07% Native American , 0.48% Asian , 0.09% Pacific Islander , 0.11% from Other Races , and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,803 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were Married Couples living together, 10.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% were non-families. 21.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.91. In the town the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males. The median income for a household in the town was $33,492, and the median income for a family was $37,644. Males had a median income of $35,769 versus $19,732 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $17,099. 14.7% of the population and 9.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 20.7% of those under the age of 18 and 13.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
