Non-Canonical spells are those spells that are mentioned only in the films, video games or other media, but not the novels. A list of canonical spells can be found in the article Canonical Spells In The World Of Harry Potter . Below is an alphabetical list of many of the known ''non-canonical'' spells in the Harry Potter movies and games. It is probably incomplete. The language of magic in the world of Harry Potter The entries below include speculations on the possible etymologies of spell incantations. It is wise to keep in mind the limits of such speculation while reading. Ms. Rowling is not a linguist, and her aim is primarily to tell a good story, not to create a consistent linguistic system. Thus, one should not expect the use of "magical" language in the books to be entirely consistent. Thus, one can speculate about the possible origins of various spell incantations or terms; but one should not necessarily expect the results to be consistent in themselves or with the histories of other languages. For this reason, there is often no ''real'' Latin derivation of spell incantations, or any other "magical terms". This is not meant to take away from the fun of speculating about it, but to caution the reader to remember that the world of Harry Potter is primarily the world of a good story. A Alarte Ascendare (uh-LAR-tay uh-SEN-dar-ay) Latin ''alacre ascendere'' = or ''alacritate ascendere'' "to ascend quickly". Spell which causes something to shoot up into the air. Lockhart tries this on the snake during the Dueling Club. It only throws it up into the air and makes it even more angry in the CoS Film Arania Exumai (uh-RAH-nee-uh EKS-oo-may) "araneus" L. spider + "exuo" L. cast aside Knocks over or throws back spiders. Harry used this spell to dispel the spiders attacking him, Ron, and Fang in the CoS Film . He learns the spell after seeing Tom Riddle cast it on Aragog in the diary. Aresto Momentum (ah-RESS-toh moh-MEN-tum) "ad" L. toward + "resto" L. stop, hold position + "momentum" L. movement Slows the speed of a moving object. Dumbledore used this spell to keep Harry from falling to his death after the Dementors flew at him over the Quidditch pitch in the PoA Film Aqua Eructo :Pronunciation: a-kwa err-UK-to :Description: This creates a large Torrent of water, used mainly in putting out large fires, usually used by or with one or more wizards. :Seen/Mentioned: In the Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire Game, this is a highly used charm when combating Salamanders. Also, could have possibly been the spell used by Harry under water in the fourth book, seeing as it was a mumbled version of the stupify jinx. :Etymology: Aqua refers to Water ; Eructo comes from the word " Erupt ". :Notes: This spell is only found in the game and will never be found in the book. See also " Aguamenti ". Ascendio (ah-SEN-dee-oh) From Latin, ascendere meaning to go up. Propels the caster of the spell upwards. Used by Harry in The Goblet Of Fire movie, towards the end of the second task, to propel himself to the surface of the lake. Avifors Turns the target into birds in the CoS Game and the GoF Game B Bombarda "bombus" L. booming, Italian "bombardare" = to bombard Used by Hermione in the PoA Film to forcibly open Sirius's cell at Hogwarts. Brakium Emendo "bracchium" L. forearm + "emendo" L. correct The spell fixes a broken forearm, or, when poorly casted, removes the bones. The first word of the incantation to this spell is given in the movie's subtitles as 'Brakium', which vaguely suggests the English word 'break'. However, the word 'Bracchium' would make much more sense, seeing as it was Harry's forearm that was broken by Dobby's rogue Bludger. C Carpe Retractum This spell is used in POA, COS and GoF games for PC and Game Cube. It releases a red beam (in the PoA and COS game, it's purple) that pulls items or heavy objects toward you, or you towards them. Cistem Aperio "cista" L. chest or box + "aperio" L. open Opens a crate Riddle used this spell in the CoS Film to open the box in which Hagrid kept Aragog when the spider was only a baby. Aragog scuttled away when the box was opened. D Depulso This spell seems to replace ''Flipendo'' as the basic offensive jinx in the PoA computer game. ''Depulso'' has the same effects as ''Flipendo''; it pushes switches, moves objects, blasts enemies, and the like. Draconifors Turns statues of dragons into real fire-breathing dragons in the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban video game. The result can be used to burn drapes and curtains revealing pathways. Ducklifors (DUCK-lih-forz) This spell is used in the GoF video game to Transfigure Blast-Ended Skrewts into harmless little rubber ducks. E Epoximise "epoxy" Eng. name of an extremely strong adhesive Trading Card Game spell card which seems to glue things to the place where they stand. The card depicts a young wizard attempting to pry his wand off of a desk after it has been hit with this charm. Evanesce Trading Card Game spell card that apparently is another form of the canonical Vanishing Spell ''Evanesco''. See Evanesco Everte Statum (eh-VER-tay STA-tum) "everto" L. turn upside down + "statum" L. fixed, in one place When Malfoy used this curse on Harry in the Duelling Club in the CoS Film , Harry was blasted off of his feet and completed a full backflip before hitting the ground a good six or seven feet from the point on the stage where the spell had hit him. F Fera Verto ''Fera'' (Latin, "wild beast") + ''verto'' (Latin, "to turn") This spell, taught to the second-year Transfiguration class in the Chamber Of Secrets Film , is used to Transfigure animals into water goblets. ''(This spell is often, and erroneously, referred to as "Vera Verto" because it's what the subtitles of the DVD indicate. However, Professor McGonagall clearly pronounces it "fârə" and the letter "V", in Latin, is either pronounced "V" or "W", and never "F". So, it simply cannot be "Vera," which makes little sense anyway.)'' Flipendo "flip" - E. turn over + pseudo-Latin ending (could also be a combination of the English words ''flip'' and ''end'', with the common spell ending ''-o'' attached as a suffix; this would direct the spell to ''flip'' things upon their ''end''s, as it sometimes does with inanimate objects such as cauldrons) This spell is used to push or topple something. One of the most useful spells in the video games because it allows the caster to move objects, blast small enemies like pixies, and push buttons set in castle walls that conveniently open doors. Used in the Trading Card Game and multiple Harry Potter video games. H Herbivicus Used to make plants grow alarmingly fast in the GoF Game . I Immobulus (im-MOH-byoo-lus) or, as Lupin pronounced it in the PoA Movie, (im-MOH-buh-luss) "immobilis" L. immovable Freezes objects where they are. Hermione used this spell to freeze the pixies who are running amok in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom in the CoS Film , but this has not been verified as canon as corresponding to the spell she actually cast in The CoS Book , which was referred to only as "a clever Freezing Charm" Lupin used this spell to stop the Whomping Willow from attacking him when he wanted to go down into the underground passage in the PoA Film Incarcifors "incarcerate" Eng. imprison + "fors" L. accident, event. This TCG spell seems to be a Transfiguration spell that transforms inanimate objects into sets of iron bars which then imprison the indirect target of the spell. The TCG card shows the notorious mountain troll from SS being imprisoned by bars descending from a chandelier on the ceiling of the girl's bathroom. Obviously, these bars were not originally incorporated in the design of the castle, so they must have been Transfigured into existence with the ''Incarcifors'' spell. Trading Card Game spell card Incendio This spell actually features in both the first computer game and various books but has different outcomes.
The canonical use of this spell is therefore to make fire. L Lacarnum Inflamorae "lacarnum" L. raincoat + "inflamare" L. set fire to Ignites a flame upon a cloak, cape, raincoat, etc. Used by Hermione in the PS Film to ignite Professor Snape 's robes. ''see also Incendio '' Note: This spell is widely and erroneously spelled ''Lacarnum Inflamori'', with an ''i'' at the end in place of the correct ''ae''. Although there are no other canonical or non-canonical spells with the ending ''-ae'', ''Lacarnum Inflamor'''ae''''' is the spelling that is clearly indicated by the subtitles of the SS Movie. Locomotor Wibbly Temporarily stuns the enemy by stopping the hands from working in the Philosopher's Stone Gameboy Game. A less powerful version of the "Locomotor Mortis" spell. Lumos Duo A wand lighting charm. Lumos Maxima "lumen" L. light + "maximus" L. large Generates a brilliant light. A more powerful version of the Lumos spell. Harry used this spell in the PoA film for a homework assignment while the Dursleys are sleeping.(which is surprising as underage magic is forbidden. There is however the possibility, that "Lumos"-type spells don't create enough of a magical signature to trigger the magic sensors that alert the Ministry to illicit magic in Muggle dwellings such as the Dursleys'.) Lumos Solem "lumen" L. light + "sol" L. sun Generates a brilliant blast of light as bright as the sun itself from the tip of the caster's wand. In the PS Film , Hermione used this spell to force the Devil's Snare plant to withdraw from Ron. M Melofors Transforms an enemies head into a pumpkin in the GoF Game . Mucus Ad Nauseam Poisons the enemy with cold-like symptoms and poisons the enemys brain. Mutatio Skullus Effect unknown. One of the spells randomly shouted during the third task in the GoF Game . Mimble Wimble Makes the opponent stutter making it difficult to pronounce an incantation in the Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (video Game) N O Oculus Reparo "oculus" L. eye, eyesight + "reparo" L. restore, repair Evidently a charm used to repair eyeglasses. This is the same as the ''Reparo'' spell with an added word to indicate the target. Hermione used this spell in the PS Film and CoS Film to repair Harry's glasses. Orbis Spins a creature or human and then drives it into the ground in the GoF Game "Orb" means "sphere", hence the circular movement of the target. P Pullus A spell that turns the target into a chicken in the GoF Game . Periculum "periculum" L. danger Shoots red sparks from the casters wand, used by Harry Potter during the third Triwizard Tournament task in the '' GoF Movie ''. R Rose Growth Makes roses grow fast Harry Potter trading game card spell S Skurge This spell, evidently a non-JKR-approved form of the Scouring Charm, is used in the CoS computer and video games to destroy a harmful and sticky material known as ectoplasm. This greenish-hued goo is a residue left behind by ghosts. Snufflifors Transfigures small books into mice in the PoA Game Spongify Allows the user to bounce on a magical gel-like substance in the CoS Game and PoA Game . T Titillando "titillo" L. tickle Trading Card Game spell card See Rictusempra . Transmogrify Eng. change form completely, transmogrify Trading Card Game spell card V Ventus This spell is used in the GoF GBA game to expel a condensed blast of wind from the tip of the caster's wand. This blast is capable of blowing enemies clear off of their feet. Verdimillius Makes unseen platforms materialize in the SS Game ; hits the target with a green lightning bolt in the ''CoS'' gameboy game (in which it is particularly effective against plants) the PoA Game and the GoF game. Vermiculus "vermis" L. worm, larva ? (etymology uncertain) This spell is used in the GoF video game to Transfigure Vampyr Mosps into their harmless larvae state. Vipera Evanesca Latin ''vipera'' = " Viper " (a kind of snake) + a form of the canonical Vanishing Spell ''Evanesco'' This is a basic Vanishing Spell with a target word ''Vipera'' added to the incantation to indicate the target of the spell. Professor Severus Snape used this modified Vanishing Spell to get rid of the snake at the Duelling Club in the Chamber Of Secrets Film . |
