NORTHERN IRAQ 1992-2003

In 1992 the UK , France and the United States acted under United Nations Security Council Resolution 688 by interventing in Saddam Hussein s' repression of the Kurdish People in Northern Iraq . The principal part of this 'Humanitarian' intervention was the establishment of a No-Fly Zone over Northern Iraq, designed to prevent bombing and chemical attack by the Iraqi regime. The success, legality and motivation of this operation is debated to this day. Key issues being why Iraq was still allowed Helicopter movement which led to some incidences of further repression, and also whether the acting states would have still been motivated if it was not for negative and politically damaging media coverage of the situation.
