Information About

Nitrogen Laser

Nitrogen laser is a Gas Laser operating in Ultraviolet range, using molecular Nitrogen as its Gain Medium , Pumped by electrical discharge.

GAIN MEDIUM

  • 3-level laser.

  • )

  • metastable lower level lifetime t=10 s (or 20min or 24 h depending on state (A ^3 Sigma _u ^+) and literature) see {Link without Title} . Thus it can only be operated pulsed with a max repition every 10 s, or you have to blow the nitrogen through the laser.

  • Opposite to the Helium-neon Laser s, the TEAs cannot mantain a continuous beam, because the Energy Level of the nitrogen decays below the required value shortly after a burst.

TYPICAL DEVICES

  • Gas pressure: some mbar to several bar. Air = 78% Nitrogen can be used.

  • Energies: µ J to mJ

  • Power: some kW to 1 MW

  • Pulse length: between few hundred picoseconds and 40 nanoseconds

  • Nitrogen lasers mostly operate superradiantly (without a Resonator Cavity )

The medium is pumped by a transversal electrical discharge.
Since the pressure can be above 1013mbar, this is called Transverse '''E'''lectrical Discharge In Gas At '''A'''tmospheric Pressure .
