Managed by Newcastle Airport Limited (Newcastle City Council & Port Stephens Council joint partners), the facility is leased from the Federal Government for the purposes of civilian air travel. This lease is for 40 years, starting from June 2005.

The terminal facilities are currently being upgraded to cope with future demand and security requirements. These are expected to be finished by December 2005

Williamtown was also named the Regional Airport of the Year 2005 by the Australian airports industry.

Impulse Airlines , a Regional Airline and later one of Australia's first Low Cost Airlines established a base at the airport in the early 1990s . It established a maintenance facility at the airport, which became the maintenance base for Jetstar 's Airbus A320 fleet following Qantas ' acquisition of Impulse in 2001 and subsequent restructure to create Jetstar.
