Democrats

  • Bill Richardson - Incumbent Governor, Announced re-election in Dec 2004

  • Bengie Regensburg - Vice Chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party and former State Representative

Republicans

  • James Damron - A native of Santa Fe, New Mexico , Damron has no political experience. He announced to a NM Blogger on March 4th 2005, that he 'probably' intends to run. Damron is taking a very similar approach to the one former Governor Gary Johnson took in his 1994 campaign.

  • Heather Wilson - U.S Rep. for New Mexico. It has been rumoured that she may run against either Jeff Bingaman for his Senate seat, or Richardson for Governor. If she does either, her seat in the House will almost certainly be threatened by Democrats , and there is doubt she can even win if she does run.

  • Daniel Foley - State Rep. A strong Republican from Roswell , the Conservatives in the southern half of the state have been pushing for him to run.

  • Walter Bradley - Former Lt. Governor of New Mexico. It should be noted that no former Lt. Governor of New Mexico has ever become Governor in an election.

  • John A. Sanchez - Many Republicans believe the only way to beat Richardson is to run a Hispanic, Sanchez is their pick, despite the fact that he lost by 17 points against Richardson in 2002 .

  • Gary Johnson - Former Republican Governor of New Mexico (1995-2003). The state's constitution allows him to run again after one term has lapsed since he last held the office. He has apparently toyed with the idea of running as a Libertarian or as a Republican again.

Others

  • Eli Chavez - Independent, Retired DEA Agent, Vietnam War Veteran, & '04 Dem. Congressional Candidate
