New Hampshire Route 101, is a state-maintained highway in southern New Hampshire connecting Keene with a Terminus in Hampton Beach . It is the major east-west highway in the southern portion of the state. Route 101 travels through the following municipalities (west to east): Keene, Marlborough, Dublin, Peterborough, Temple, Wilton, Milford, Amherst, Bedford, Manchester, Auburn, Candia, Raymond, Epping, Brentwood, Exeter, Stratham, and Hampton. The highway is a two-lane surface road from the Keene terminus until the Route 114 terminus in Bedford , where it becomes a four-lane Limited-access Highway . Route 101 becomes a six-lane Limited-access Highway where it merges with I-293 in Manchester , and an eight-lane limited-access highway where it merges with I-93 . From its intersection with I-93, Route 101 returns to a four-lane limited-access highway until Exit 12 at I-95 in Hampton , then becomes a Two-lane Freeway at Exit 13, and at its intersection with US 1 it becomes a two-lane road until its terminus in Hampton Beach. Most of the eastern section of Route 101 used to be two-lane freeway until the mid 1990's. This highly travelled road had numerous accidents, prominently advertised on large signs at the start of the two-lane freeway segment between Exit 5 and 6 in Raymond ; "XX Highway Deaths next XX miles." Locally this road was known as the "Highway of Death" for the unusally high number of accidents and the sign advertising. In the mid-1990's, the two-lane freeway segment was dualized over much of the swampland it traversed in Rockingham county, creating a full divided controlled access freeway between Manchester and I-95. The old "Highway of Death" nickname and the signs have disappeared from use. ]] The portion of Route 101 from the Exeter/Stratham exit (Jct Route 108 ) to Hampton Beach was formerly known as Route 51 prior to 1994, and was known locally as the "Exeter-Hampton Expressway." During this time, there were two traffic lights located on the limited access 2 lane highway, the "east end lights" at the terminus of Route 88 (which has been subsequently rerouted on a new stretch of road to intersect with Route 108 just south of the NH 101/108 SPUI intersection) and the "west end lights" which were west of the Newfields Route 85 exit on what is now known as Route 27 . Route 27 west of Stratham was formerly Route 101 before the 4 lane highway opened. An interesting fact was that an overpass was built in 1991 over North Road in Brentwood near the Rockingham County Jail Farm to accommodate the future Route 101, but the highway was not actually built until 2000 or so - it was known locally as "the overpass to nowhere". The western terminus of NH-101 is in Keene at the junction with NH-9 / NH-10 . The eastern terminus is in Hampton at the junction with Ocean Boulevard, which is NH-1A . Total length of NH-101 is approximately 95 miles (153 km), however, the New Hampshire Department Of Transportation has installed mileposts on the freeway section east of Interstate 93 that begin at mile 100. NEW HAMPSHIRE ROUTE 101A New Hampshire Route 101A (NH-101A) is an east–west highway in Hillsborough County . It connects Milford and Nashua . Although the majority of the road is in Milford and Nashua, 101A also includes small portions of Merrimack , Hollis , and Amherst , the last sharing with Milford the distinction as the only town to include both Rte. 101 and Rte. 101A within its boundaries. The western terminus of NH-101A is in Milford at the junction with NH-101. The eastern terminus is in the center of Nashua at the junction with NH-111 , on the west side of the bridge over the Merrimack River . At that location Route 101A is locally named Bridge Street, although when the road enters Nashua through Merrimack, it is known as Amherst Street until the intersection of Amherst, Concord and Main Streets. Total length of NH-101A is approximately 10.6 miles (17.0 km). NEW HAMPSHIRE ROUTE 101E New Hampshire Route 101E is a short stretch of urban road in Hampton , Rockingham County , New Hampshire . This road connects Lafayette Road ( U.S. Route 1 ) with Ocean Boulevard ( NH-1A ). Route 101E is locally named Winnacunnet Road. Total length of NH-101E is 2.3 miles (3.8 km). SEE ALSO |
