New England Telephone was the name of the Bell Operating Company serving Maine , Massachusetts , New Hampshire , Rhode Island , and Vermont prior to 1994 . It became part of NYNEX on January 1, 1984, when AT&T was divested of its local operating companies. After merging with Bell Atlantic , the name changed to Bell Atlantic - New England, Inc., and after Bell Atlantic bought GTE , the name changed again, to Verizon New England, Inc.

New England Telephone was headquarted in Boston, MA .

Prior to 1984 , AT&T controlled New England Telephone, holding 86% of the company.

It had no connection to New England Telephone And Telegraph , a short-lived company that dissolved in 1879; or Southern New England Telephone (SNET) which covered Connecticut and small parts of New York .

It's slogan was "We're the one for you, New England."

New England Telephone, through various mergers and successor companies, has carried various names and used numerous Logo s.
