Nevada Stoody Hayes was the morganatic wife of Alfonso Of Bragança , Duke of Oporto. Nevada Stoody Hayes was born on 21 October 1885 at Ohio, U.S.A.. Her parents were Jacob Walter Stoody (1846-1922) and Nancy Miranda McNeel (1848-1922) who married in 1867. She was the couple's 2nd child and 2nd daugther. Her brothers were: - Cora Stoody (1869-1952) - Clara McNeel Stoody (1871-1943) - Charles Edward Stoody (1877-1940) - Josephine Stoody (1879-1952) - Florence Stoody (1885-1977) Nevada married 4 times: I: 1906, Lee Agnew (1867-1924) II: 1906 (?), William Henry Chapman (1834-1907) III: 1909, Filipe van Volkenburg (1853- 1950) IV: 1917, Alfonso of Bragança, Duke of Oporto (1865-1920) She had no children from these marriages. Nevada was an opportunistic woman and a social climber: with her marriages she was trying to get more money and social status. When she met a European Prince, single and bon-vivant she grab the chance to become Royalty. She married Alfonso of Bragança on 26 September 1917 at Rome, Italy. After this marriage she was called Nevada of Braganza! Afonso tried for his American wife to be accepted by the Portuguese Royal Family but he didn't succeed. The marriage was morganatic, Afonso forfeited his rights to the Crown and his pension was cut. When Nevada understood that she wouldn't be a Princess and the money wasn't enough, her "love" soon cool off and she abandoned her husband. Alfonso without wife, family and money started to live in obscurity and soon died in 1920, with only 55 years-old, ill, in poverty and almost with hunger. After the death of King Manuel II of Portugal (Afonso's nephew) in 1932, Nevada asked to the Republican Government that all the Braganza's patrimony should be given to her since she considered herself the universal heir! For this outrage, Nevada was put in prison during some months. She died on 11 January 1941 at age 55 at Tampa, Florida, U.S.A.. |
