"Near Wild Heaven" was the third single released from , the lyrics are a collaboration between Mills and leader singer Michael Stipe . It failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 , but it did manage to peak at #27 on the UK Singles Charts . Mike Mills had previously written the lyrics to the single " (Don't Go Back To) Rockville " and he had sung " Superman ," which was a cover of a song by The Clique , but he had never done both. Like the other songs Mills had written, "Near Wild Heaven" tended to be more simplistic in structure than those written by Michael Stipe. The song has two equal length verses with the same bridge leading into the chorus, which is a mere two lines. There is then a third bridge after the second chorus which leads back into the chorus. The song is upbeat and playful in the music and the meaning of the lyrics become lost in Mills's almost jovial singing. The song is the first of numerous R.E.M. songs to be influenced by the sound of the Beach Boys , of which 3 out of 4 band members are fans. Future songs to be influenced by their works include " At My Most Beautiful ". In the song, the narrator is holding his love, but he senses that something is missing or "that something has gone wrong." He fears that this imperfection in their love will cause it to break to down, even though they are so "near wild heaven, {Link without Title} not near enough." SINGLE COVERS |
