The base is located on the Reykjanes peninsula on the south-west portion of the island. The major commands stationed on the base are United States Naval Air Station Keflavik, the Air Forces 85th Group, the Iceland Defense Force ( NATO ), NCTS Keflavik, and U.S. Naval Hospital Keflavik. There are also over 700 Icelandic Civilians working in close coordination with NATO military and civilian personnel. On 15 March 2006 the U.S. Ambassador to Iceland announced the decision of the United States to withdraw the Iceland Defense Force before the end of September 2006. SEE ALSO EXTERNAL LINKS
