Nathaniel (bartimaeus Trilogy)

ROLE IN '' THE AMULET OF SAMARKAND ''

In '' The Amulet Of Samarkand '', Nathaniel starts off as a young boy who, at the age of six, had been given up by his parents to apprenticeship under a Whitehall magician named Arthur Underwood. Underwood begins teaching the boy in magic, but Nathaniel, being curious and inquisitive, decides to advance his education to higher levels without the knowledge of his master.

However, at the age of ten, in his master's party, Nathaniel is humiliated by a greedy and ambitious young fellow magician named Simon Lovelace . In a fit of juvenile fury, Nathaniel hatches a plan to have his vengeance.

He creates a Scrying Glass and in it views Simon Lovelace receiving a suspicious looking package from a bearded man who is clothed in a cloak stained with blood. He also hears the words, ''The Amulet Of Samarkand is yours Simon Lovelace'' in reference to the package. The boy then chooses to summon a powerful 5,000-year old djinni, named Bartimaeus , and charges him to steal the Amulet from Lovelace. What Nathaniel does not realize is that, Lovelace himself stole the Amulet and has big plans for its use.

To add to his problems, Missus Underwood inadvertently gives out his real name to Bartimaeus. This vastly limits his control over the djinni.

Bartimaeus successfully manages to steal the Amulet from Lovelace, but his exploit ends in disaster when Lovelace returns to take back his amulet and in the process destroys Nathaniel's house and kills his master.

Dejected, Nathaniel contemplates his next move and learns of a conference that is going to be held with all the powerful magicians of age attending, and with Lovelace as the host. Seizing this chance as his best lead, Nathaniel and the reluctant Bartimaeus decide to secretly witness this conference.

Once there, they come into a contact with a mercenary who seems to have a surprising resilience to Bartimaeus' magical attacks. Meanwhile, Nathaniel gets captured by Lovelace and his accomplice who plan to kill him, but manages to escape from his captors. Together, Bartimaeus and Nathaniel manage to enter the hall where the meeting is due to take place. Once there, Simon Lovelace carries out his grand scheme and summons a terrifying entity, named Ramuthra, to destroy all the members of government. While doing so, he wears '' The Amulet Of Samarkand '', which has the power to protect its wearer from magical attacks. However, Nathaniel and Bartimaeus manage to divert him and destroy the bonds tying Ramuthra to the earth.

This act wins Nathaniel recognition and respect of the majority of the magicians, including the Prime Minister Rupert Devereaux. This enables Nathaniel to start a new life as an apprentice magician for the government under the name of John Mandrake.

ROLE IN PTOLEMY'S GATE

In the final book of the series, Nathaniel is killed by Nouda, a spirit of remarkable power who was defeated only by the breaking of Gladstone's staff, which Nathaniel gave his life to destroy.
