In a jet engine the nacelle is the covering and is composed of the inlet Cowl , fan cowl, thrust reverser, and the exhaust nozzle. In the world of Ballooning , including that of Airships , the nacelle is a suspended basket which contains machinery and passengers. This is the original French use of the term. In English , "gondola" has replaced its use. On a wind turbine, the nacelle often refers to the structure on top of the tower which houses all of the generating components. The word "nacelle" is also used in Science Fiction to describe various parts of fictional Starships , such as the Star Trek series, along with many other terms of Naval origin. See Warp Drive . |
