GEOGRAPHY


Mountain Grove is located at 37°7'56" North, 92°15'50" West (37.132243, -92.263849).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 11.0 Km&2 (4.2 Mi&2 ). 10.9 km&2 (4.2 mi&2) of it is land and 0.1 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.18% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 4,574 people, 1,976 households, and 1,235 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 421.5/km&2 (1,091.6/mi&2). There were 2,244 housing units at an average density of 206.8/km&2 (535.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.44% White , 0.17% African American , 0.61% Native American , 0.09% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.48% from Other Races , and 1.20% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,976 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were Married Couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 80.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,131, and the median income for a family was $25,927. Males had a median income of $24,913 versus $17,003 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $13,508. 28.2% of the population and 22.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 38.1% of those under the age of 18 and 18.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
