Designed by Spanish engineer Agustin De Bétancourt with a unique roof without internal support for 45 m on top pillars it was erected by the Russian architect Joseph Bové from 1817 to 1825. Its style is Neoclassical , the colours white and yellow. It was used first to have parades of horsemen and a training school for officers. From 1831 to our days it has been an exhibition place. In 1867 , Hector Berlioz and Nikolai Rubinstein performed at the Manege before the crowd of 12,000 spectators. It was there that Khruschev famously chided avant-garde artists for promoting degenerative art. On 14 March 2004 the building caught fire and burnt to the ground, killing two firefighters and leaving just the walls remaining on site. The official investigation concluded that a short-circuit caused the fire (the building has been used as an art gallery after the breakup of the Soviet Union). On 18 February 2005 the restored Manege resumed its activity as an exhibition hall with the same exhibition that had been scheduled on the day of its fire. |
