Information About

Morton Betts

In a sporting career that featured first-class cricket for Middlesex (1 match) and Kent (2 matches), Betts was also one of the pioneers of Football (soccer) and scored the winning goal in the final of the world's first football competition, the 1872 FA Cup . Betts played for Wanderers F.C. as a Striker in that match, under the assumed name of ''A.H. Chequer'' (the name presumably alluded to his connection with Harrow School , although it is unknown why he was playing under a pseudonym). He usually played football as a Full-back .

As a former pupil of Harrow School , he later played for the Old Harrovians Football Club and (as a Goalkeeper ) made one appearance for England versus Scotland in 1877, whilst with this club.

Switching between Football and Cricket duties frequently, he is also associated with Essex . He played for Essex in 1884, before they became a first-class county, and he acted as secretary of the Essex CCC from 1887 to 1890 .

For twenty years, Betts was a board member of The Football Association .

He spent his final years living in France , and died aged 66 , shortly before the outbreak of World War I .
