It covers approximately 1,700 acres (6.9 sq kilometers) and is made up of gardens of various plant types and groupings of plants from specific geographical areas. It includes some native woodland forest preserves and a restored Illinois Prairie . It was established on the 14th of December 1922 by Mr. Joy Morton , owner of the Morton Salt Company.
