Monroe is a town located in Fairfield County, Connecticut . As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 19,247. The current first selectman is Andrew Nunn. The town was recently featured in Forbes' "Best Places to Live" feature article. Monroe is largely considered a bedroom community of New York City. According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 68.2 Km&2 (26.3 Mi&2 ). 67.7 km&2 (26.1 mi&2) of it is land and 0.5 km&2 (0.2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 19,247 people, 6,481 households, and 5,346 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 284.4/km&2 (736.5/mi&2). There were 6,601 housing units at an average density of 97.5/km&2 (252.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 96.87% White , 0.20% African American , 0.08% Native American , 1.52% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.50% from Other Races , and 0.83% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 6,481 households out of which 42.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.0% were Married Couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% were non-families. 14.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.31. In the town the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males. The median income for a household in the town was $80,000 and the median income for a family was $110,000. Males had a median income of $91,109 versus $61,572 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $86,780. 0.6% of the population and 0.0% of families were below the Poverty Line . 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. HISTORY The Monroe Town seal is in the form of a circle with the words "Town of Monroe Connecticut" written in the outer rim of the seal. Inside this outer circle is a profile of a bust of James Monroe , who was the fifth President of the United States, serving from 1817-1825. CITY INFORMATION Monroe Public Schools The school district for Monroe includes approximately 4,500 students, in three elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school.
