A third generation Ugandan-Indian family is expelled from
Uganda during the
1970s when
Idi Amin takes power. The father, Jay (
Roshan Seth ) moves his wife, Kinnu (
Sharmila Tagore ) and daughter, Mina (
Sarita Choudhury ) to the
U.S. State of
Mississippi in order to live with family members who own a chain of motels there. Years later, Mina falls in love with Demetrius (
Denzel Washington ) an
African American man and the respective families have to come to terms with it.
