Milton is a city located in Rock County, Wisconsin . As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,132. The city is located within the Town Of Milton . The city was formed as a result of the 1967 merger of the villages of Milton and Milton Junction. Originally named Prairie du Lac, Milton was settled in structure in the United States. Goodrich, a noted Abolitionist , is believed to have aided Fugitive Slaves as a stop on the Underground Railroad . The former Milton College operated from 1844 to 1982 . GEOGRAPHY Milton is located at 42°46'40" North, 88°57'18" West (42.777795, -88.955133). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 8.4 Km&2 (3.2 Mi&2 ). None of the area is covered with water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 5,132 people, 2,034 households, and 1,383 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 613.5/km&2 (1,587.8/mi&2). There were 2,129 housing units at an average density of 254.5/km&2 (658.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.07% White , 0.18% Black or African American , 0.14% Native American , 0.31% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.49% from Other Races , and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,034 households out of which 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were Married Couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04. In the city the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.6 males. The median income for a household in the city was $43,201, and the median income for a family was $52,384. Males had a median income of $39,392 versus $22,866 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $22,058. 6.7% of the population and 3.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 13.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
