Milton (formerly known as Scratch Ankle) is a city located in of Santa Rosa County.


GEOGRAPHY

Milton is located at (30.630312, -87.046486).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 11.9 Km&2 (4.6 Mi&2 ). 11.3 km&2 (4.4 mi&2) of it is land and 0.5 km&2 (0.2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 4.59% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 7,045 people, 2,674 households, and 1,831 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 622.4/km&2 (1,611.1/mi&2). There were 3,151 housing units at an average density of 278.4/km&2 (720.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 77.84% White , 15.95% African American , 0.71% Native American , 1.73% Asian , 0.17% Pacific Islander , 1.04% from Other Races , and 2.56% from two or more races. 3.45% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,674 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were Married Couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,060, and the median income for a family was $34,889. Males had a median income of $30,352 versus $18,973 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $15,685. 16.6% of the population and 10.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 20.9% of those under the age of 18 and 16.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


RELIGION

Evelyn Burrell was the first ordained female Pastor and African American female pastor of an organized church in Milton, Fl. Second Chance Church Of God In Christ was under the direction of Pastor Burrell until August of 2004. Under the banner of The Church Of God In Christ presiding Bishop G.E. Patterson , Pastor Burrell was given the task to wins souls for God under the leadership of Bishop John D. Young Sr ., presiding over the Northwest Florida Jurisdiction .
