CADET CANDIDATES AND LIFE

A ten month year program where potential Westpoint attendees (known as Cadet Candidates, and often simplified to "CCs”) learn and cope with the rigors of an Army education, both academically and militarily before attending West Point proper. As a "five year program" of sorts for West Point, many feel that the West Point Prep school allows for a better transition for students.

Differing from traditional American colleges in dates, Cadet Candidates arrive at the Prep school in early July for Cadet Candidate Basic Training or CCBT, an intensive four week program to put CCs in shape, and provide the foundation for army and military instruction. Immediately following the CCBT, classes start, and finish up in mid May. In June, those who attended the Prep School will go to West Point to help prepare the academy for the upcoming year.

In terms of academics, USMAPS instructs include: English, Physics, Calculus, Military History, physical and military training among other courses. All CCs must play a sport which is considered a course. (see Athletics)

CCs receive a free education for their year at USMAPS, and in return for work on the base such as guard duty, receive pay to help cover expenses such as books, and clothing.

ADMISSIONS

Like the other United States Military Academies Prep Schools , there is no separate application for USMAPS, only the West Point application. Admission officers will offer USMAPS to likely West Point Cadets who lack the grades or skills necessary for Westpoint. Along with the West Point application, all potential students must get a Congressional Appointment. During the middle of the Prep school year, CCs must redo applications to apply to West Point, including the Congressional Appointment; however most CCs go on to attend West Point. {Link without Title}

(For more information on the admissions process itself, refer to the Westpoint article as the admissions process is excatly the same)

ATHLETICS

West Point Prep has an extensive athletic program including "football, women's volleyball, cross-country, track, men and women's basketball, soccer, lacrosse, swimming, and wrestling." {Link without Title}
Known as the Black Knights, with black and gold colors, the Westpoint Prep school primarily participates with the other United States military academies prep schools, especially their rival the Naval Academy Preparatory School . Notably, many potential athletes are sent to West Point Prep school to refine their skills before they can attend West Point itself.

LOCATION CHANGE

Due to the Base Realignment And Closure, 2005 , Fort Monmouth is currently in the process of being shut down. However, all USMAPS classes will continue to study and work at the Fort Monmouth campus. For more information you can contact the West Point Public Affairs Office at (845) 938-3808/2006.
